The switch I always wanted

My hearing has never been great. Not a medical problem, but I’d often hear people talking without catching what they said, and I had to ask them to repeat themselves again and again. As a kid I wished for a switch: flip it on, and everything people said would appear as text. Captions for real life.

Captions as a safety net

Later I watched a lot of English video — Netflix, YouTube, Instagram Reels — always with subtitles on. At first because English isn’t my first language. Then simply because captions felt safe: I no longer worried about missing a word or mishearing one.

It turns out lots of people watch this way, even in their own language — 63% of US adults under 30 prefer subtitles. Yet creators kept telling me there was no caption tool that was actually good to use.

Well — that sounded like my cue.

What I care about
